“The Grazing Management Plan helps us determine the need for soil nutrients. We have noticed our soils were declining in productivity and desired to adopt a more regenerative agriculture approach to our ranching and farming practices.”
Jenny and Alex Robinson, owners of the 144 Mile Ranch, have embraced a proactive approach to sustainable ranching by implementing a comprehensive Grazing Management Plan with funding received through the Beneficial Management Practices (BMP) program. Their primary goal was to enhance soil biology and function, leading to healthier forages, improved soil health, and greater carbon sequestration.
Jenny stated: “My husband and I take great pride in our ranch, the 144 Mile. We wish to take advantage of this program to further enhance our pastures and water use for the livestock, therefore improving our soil biology and function and providing a healthier ecosystem. Through the use of rotational grazing, we promote more efficient use of our pastures, which enhances carbon sequestration and fosters long-term sustainability. The Grazing Management Plan helps us determine the need for soil nutrients. We have noticed our soils were declining in productivity and desired to adopt a more regenerative agriculture approach to our ranching and farming practices.”
Going forward, the impact of 144 Mile Ranch’s BMP project will stand out. By implementing rotational grazing and monitoring soil nutrients, the ranch will increase forage yields, reduce input costs through better nutrient management, and improve pasture resilience during dry periods. These changes will directly improve the farm’s bottom line by lowering feed costs and enhancing cattle performance, thereby boosting the operation’s overall competitiveness.
The support through the BMP program enabled the Robinsons to access expert consultative services and planning tools that would otherwise be inaccessible. The result is a more profitable and sustainable ranching operation. For 144 Mile Ranch, this comprehensive support has been instrumental in improving both environmental and economic success, making their ranch a model for others looking to enhance their competitiveness through environmental stewardship.
Funding for the BMP program has been provided by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3.5 billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Additional funding has been provided by CleanBC. The program is delivered by IAF.
