Rebecca Reid, a passionate farmer from the Fraser Valley, has always prioritized sustainable practices in her agricultural business. Faced with the realities of changing weather patterns and the need for improved resource management, Rebecca sought solutions that would not only enhance her productivity but also take care of the environment.
Farmers who have an Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) learn how to reduce agriculture’s impact on the environment. Her journey began when she learned about the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) Program. Working alongside her EFP Advisor Darrell Zbeetnoff, Rebecca embarked on the completion of her Environmental Farm Plan workbook. This process allowed her to evaluate her farm’s specific environmental challenges and identify practical strategies to address them.
As Rebecca translated her insights into action, she implemented various Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to her farm’s unique needs. The financial support available through the Beneficial Management Practices program made these changes achievable, allowing her to invest in sustainable technologies and practices that would protect her land and boost her yield.
“Our recently purchased property has been a work in progress, requiring a lot of effort and expense to turn it into a viable farm. The pasture fields had been left for many years and were overrun with shrubs and weeds, with little quality forage remaining. With the help of both grazing and nutrient management plans, we have obtained specific advice on effective, and environmentally friendly ways to turn this overgrown landscape into pasture for horses and hay for forage. While much work lies ahead, I feel we now have the necessary tools to improve our land’s productivity, and to contribute positively to BC’s sustainable farmland.,” Rebecca concluded, encouraging others in the farming community to take the leap and engage with the resources provided by the program.
Thanks to the Environmental Farm Plan Program, Rebecca Reid’s farm is now better equipped to navigate the challenges of modern agriculture while promoting a healthier environment.
Funding for these programs have been provided by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3.5 billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Additional funding has been provided by CleanBC. The program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC (IAF).
