Allison Creek Ranch is a working cattle operation in British Columbia focused on improving livestock management and on-farm decision making. As part of ongoing efforts to modernize operations, rancher Linda Allison sought tools to make animal tracking and herd management more efficient.
With support from the Traceability Adoption Program, Allison Creek Ranch invested in new livestock-monitoring equipment, including a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) livestock tag reader and load bars for weighing calves. These upgrades will make it easier to track animals, especially during fall processing, and support more informed management decisions.
“The livestock tag reader will make tracking so much simpler. I’m looking forward to using this system this fall during processing cows. It will be so much easier to match cows who have lost their dangle tags by using the RFID tag, this will certainly help me with management decisions regarding breeding.” says Linda. By improving the ability to track cattle and monitor weights, these tools will help streamline day-to-day operations while supporting better long-term planning for the herd.
Funding for the Traceability Adoption Program is provided by the governments of Canada and British Columbia through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The program is delivered by IAF.
