Supporting Orchard Renewal
Through participation in the Enhanced Replant Program (ERP), A&J Bhathal Organic Orchard Ltd. has taken a proactive step toward strengthening the long‑term productivity, resilience, and sustainability of its orchard operation.
ERP, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is designed to support wine grape, berry, and tree fruit producers in replacing older plantings with climate‑resilient, in‑demand varieties, helping ensure the continued competitiveness of British Columbia’s agriculture sector in both domestic and global markets.
Operating a 30‑acre commercial perennial crop operation in British Columbia, A&J Bhathal Organic Orchard Ltd. produces a mix of pome and stone fruits.
Following the removal of existing apple varieties Braeburn and Gala, the operation applied to ERP under Stream 1: Tree Fruit Replant, which supports existing tree fruit growers undertaking replanting activities. The orchard transitioned away from Braeburn and Gala varieties, replanting one acre with Ambrosia apples.
ERP funding helped enable a replant strategy grounded in agronomic best practices. Prior to replanting, soil nutrient testing was completed to ensure the site was suitable for long‑term success. Plant material was sourced from Canadian nurseries, strengthening domestic supply chains while ensuring high-quality, regionally appropriate stock.
Through ERP support, A&J Bhathal Organic Orchard Ltd. was able to invest confidently in orchard renewal that aligns with both climate resilience and market opportunity. The replant positions the operation to produce premium pome fruit, extend orchard longevity, and maintain strong productivity in the face of environmental and economic challenges.
By supporting projects like this one, the Enhanced Replant Program is helping BC producers modernize their orchards, strengthen competitiveness, and contribute to a resilient, future‑focused agriculture sector.
The Government of BC funds the Enhanced Replant Program (ERP) through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The program is delivered by IAF.
In February 2025, A&J Bhathal Organic Orchard Ltd. was approved to receive $8,528.76 in funding from ERP to replant 1 acre of apples. For a full list of approved ERP projects, visit iafbc.ca/erp/approved-projects/.
