Bessette Creek Advances Water Supply Planning Through AWP Stream 3

The Bessette Creek Agricultural Sustainability Society (BASS) is bringing a collaborative, watershed-based approach to water security in the North Okanagan through the funding received from the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program (AWP). Formed by local water users after repeated summers of restrictions and drought stress, BASS is working to identify practical, long-term solutions that support both agricultural production and healthy stream flows in the Bessette Creek watershed.

Through AWP Stream 3: Assessments, Engineering Studies or Plans, BASS pursued an agricultural water supply assessment feasibility study to understand water limitations in the watershed better and identify feasible water storage opportunities. The project used hydrological modelling, site screening, and community engagement to evaluate where additional storage could help reduce irrigation pressure during low-flow periods while also supporting fish habitat and in-stream flow needs.

“The Bessette Creek Agricultural Sustainability Society (BASS) was pleased to complete the Bessette Creek Water Storage Investigation. Our work so far has included both detailed technical studies and community workshops. We believe that we will be able to construct a water storage facility to enhance stream flows, which will enhance salmon habitat and allow for continued sustainable agriculture.”
Gary Hertgers, BASS Chair

This work is an important early step toward resilient water management in the Bessette Creek watershed. By building the technical foundation for future infrastructure decisions, BASS is helping local producers plan for drought, protect crop productivity, and reduce the risk of severe yield losses, while also advancing broader watershed goals for fisheries and environmental stewardship. The project demonstrates how AWP funding can help communities move from shared water challenges to coordinated, evidence-based solutions.

The Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program is funded by the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and delivered by IAF.
