Janice, the owner and operator of Janice’s Lamb in the Central Okanagan, has always been committed to sustainability and animal welfare. With a focus on grass-fed lambs and rotational grazing, she wanted to ensure her farming practices were not only productive but also environmentally responsible.
When Janice learned about the Environmental Farm Plan program, she saw an opportunity to take her stewardship to the next level. Working alongside her EFP advisor, Janice conducted a thorough on-farm assessment. Together, they identified ways to improve water management, soil health, and pasture rotation. Thanks to her EFP, Janice was able to access Beneficial Management Practices (BMP) funding support to install new fencing for better grazing management.
“Carl, [my EFP Advisor,] was great to work with, and I felt like he really saw my passion for what I am doing here. I was well supported to make a big improvement to the grazing program… I appreciate everything the program has done for me!”
The results of her BMP project were immediate: healthier pastures, happier lambs, and a reduced environmental footprint. Janice said, “I have really been impressed with the success of my rotational grazing plan, including using manure instead of synthetic fertilizer. The use of more portable electric fencing gave me the chance to really use the fields effectively, and the lambs grew fast.”
Janice’s EFP shows how the program helps producers like her strengthen their farms and protect the land for generations to come.
Funding for the Environmental Farm Plan program has been provided by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3.5-billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency of the agriculture, agri‐food and agri‐based products sector. The program is delivered by IAF.
